Stay Cool

Insulin is cool, or should be

“Don’t blow your top!”

“Keep your cool!”

“Don’t spend all day in the sun!”

All things I like to say to my insulin.

Insulin Doesn’t Like Extremes

When I collect my insulin from the pharmacy, it’s always coming straight from the fridge.

If there’s anything I know, it’s that insulin doesn’t want to be hot.

But I still like going to hot places, and I still like having insulin.

I’ve learned to be prepared (I was a boy scout) for different situations.

What if there isn’t a fridge available?

What if I have to leave my insulin in a hot car?

Some tricks are needed to keep the insulin from getting hot.

Tricks of the Endocrine Trade

Parking in shade is nice but watch for falling fruit

1. I take a chilli bag (insulated cooler bag) with me with a slicker pad (ice pad).

2. Whenever I park a car on a sunny day, I look for shade. It is amazing the difference it makes getting back into a car which has been in the shade.

3. FriO bag. Just add water. It’ll evaporate to keep cool. Specially designed for insulin.

Of course, insulin is okay to be at room temperature for quite a while. I don’t always use these tricks, only when the chance is there of getting uncomfortably hot.
