It takes me several goes to work out an ‘expected’ BGL shape to inject for.
I mean, it’s difficult to match the shape of insulin to the shape of BGL after food.
It doesn’t need to be perfect, but some foods are way easier than others.
A piece of fruit is not something I tend to find too troublesome. Fast insulin, injected around the time of eating seems to work fairly well.
Foods like pizza or takeaways? Now that’s a whole different story.
Sometimes my BGL stays at the same level for a few hours. I used to think I’d done a great job then BAM – testing again a few hours later and my BGL had shot up into the stratosphere.
So, I know some meals are going to be a tad more unpredictable. However, I still keep records of these pitfalls. It means I have a bit more information going into next time I have it.
For example, I’ve worked out (for 1 particular meal I like) approximately:
the right insulin dose, and
the right time to inject, and
with the appropriate insulin
to get a pretty good BGL the next morning.
Now, of course my next-morning BGL isn’t anywhere near perfect after this meal, but it’s much, much better than I used to have. It is still possible to eat ‘crazy’ meals, but I didn’t give up on working them out.
An annoying experiment, but at least it’s tasty and gets easier the more I do it.
