Should You Do It Quite Like That?

Responding to D-Police

"Too fast - and too loud!" "Please slow down!" (advice no race fan would ever give)

Sometimes People are Confused

Some people are very confused and/or ignorant about ‘diabetes’. That’s ok – I don’t know lots about lots either.

The problem is if they decide to ‘police’.

“Now Sonny – is it smart to eat fatty foods with your condition?”

“No dessert for you!!”

Lecturing a t1der (a complex, complex condition) without having studied or lived it is like:

Lecturing a bird on how to fly…

...or lecturing a bee on how to make honey

It’s up to each t1der how to respond

Some t1ders take a more educational approach. Some take a more confrontational approach. I say stick up for yourself with a smile if the diabetes police take an interest in you.

Eg, D-Police: “Should you be eating that (cake)?”

Me: “Should you? Look at you!” 😉

And I reckon do an elevator pitch teaching (under 30 seconds) if someone is simply curious and honest about not knowing something. That doesn’t bother me.

Eg, D-Ignorant: “What can you eat with t1d?”

Me: “Anything. I just inject insulin to cover what I eat.”
