Can vs Can’t
Language makes a difference
Good to be realistic AND optimistic
There are some things a t1der can’t do. You can probably find (or make) a list.
But let’s ignore the list for a minute. Maybe lock the list up somewhere deep underground, and think about what the animals say.
A fish doesn’t say:
“I can’t walk on land.”
Maybe it says instead: “I CAN swim.”
An elephant doesn’t say:
“I can’t fly.”
Maybe it says instead:
“I CAN stamp on anyone I want to.”
An eagle has perhaps the best of all skills.
It can fly and see very far.
It still can’t do cool stuff like ride a bike or pat a cat (like me). Does it worry about that? No way.
Just like those creatures,
I try to forget about what I can’t do,
I know there’s stuff I did differently when I didn’t have t1d,
For now, I try to talk about what I CAN do.
