A big thumbs-up to the person who came up with rules of thumb.
They don’t always work of course – the point is that they work, generally speaking.
The same is true of Proverbs. They give wise advice, but it doesn’t mean every single scenario will line up perfectly. No matter, I reckon it’s better to be generally good at a lot of things than super at 1 thing.
Finding My Own Rules
After eating the same
at the same
in the same
while doing the same exercise,
I can consider simple rules of thumb for me
Here’s How I Write My Rules:
1 piece of pizza = _ units of insulin
That way of stating the rule of thumb means it’s flexible for whatever quantity I eat
How much more insulin do I use in winter than in summer?
Maybe I say “1/5th more” – if my summer average changes, I can guess what my winter amount will then be.
How does exercise change what I inject?
Is it 1/2 of the usual dose, say if I’m exercising just after a meal?
The more general + flexible the rule is stated, the more useful it is.
